If you’re a marketer supporting your company’s sustainability journey, chances are you’ve thought about creating a corporate sustainability video.
After all, videos are a powerful way to showcase your brand’s commitment to sustainable practices. But with increasing consumer awareness around greenwashing, how can you ensure your video communicates authenticity without misleading claims?
In this article, I’ll dive into the essentials of creating effective corporate sustainability videos, share tips to avoid false claims and highlight best practices I’ve learned along the way.
What is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Video?
A corporate social responsibility (CSR) marketing video is a powerful tool. It’s used by companies to showcase their commitment to social, environmental, and ethical responsibilities.
CSR refers to a company’s efforts to operate in ways that contribute positively to society and the environment—whether it’s by reducing environmental impact, conserving natural resources, or supporting the well-being of people, including employees, communities, and consumers.
Brands often use videos as a key element in their CSR marketing video campaigns to communicate these efforts to a broader audience. These videos can serve multiple purposes, but the two most common approaches are:
- Highlighting a Specific CSR Initiative: Many brands create videos focused on a particular CSR program or goal. For instance, a company may produce a video showcasing its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, invest in renewable energy, or support local communities through charitable initiatives. This approach allows the company to zero in on a specific cause and show concrete examples of its positive impact.
- Showcasing Overall CSR Goals or Achievements: Another common approach is using a video to highlight the brand’s broader CSR strategy or long-term achievements. These videos may provide a high-level overview of various sustainability efforts, ethical practices, or social programs that align with the company’s core values. By summarizing their CSR journey, brands can demonstrate their overall commitment to making a positive difference.
CSR videos are a dynamic and engaging way to tell your brand’s story, connect with stakeholders, and build trust with an audience increasingly focused on sustainability and corporate accountability.
However, even though the above approaches might be normalized by many marketing agencies and consultants, they are all subject to GREENWASHING CREEP.
In the YouTube video, I elaborate further on how to avoid this and how to approach your CSR video differently:
